Toys – beauty of wood

When my first child was born, I had this dream that I will give him only few, but really special toys. I was struck by some houses I saw, with many, many toys, and kids, who don’t really care about them. I wished to learn my child the respect for small but special things. I was even asking family to buy for eventual gifts some wooden or special (please not plastic) toys. It was kind of radical, wasn’t it? Life verified this dream a bit, but I still love wooden toys so much ;-) ...

Today just few I like :  Kiko-kids, new brand from Japan. Something from Scandinavia: a classic Rosendahl animals from Denmark. Cuboro, fantastic toy from Switzerland .

Illustration /graphic design – Asia Gwis . Kavka

Asia Gwis (1976) is another talented illustrator from Poland, which I want you to meet. I’m a big fun of her work. Asia has been developing her style for some time already. What is really special is not only her great talent for ilustration, and design, Kavka’s creativity is expressed also in great design of her house :
kavka-lives-here/, and blog /kavkadesign /.
So many fields touched by her talent, sensitive but strong at the same time! I love the idea, that internet allows us to see how the ilustraitor/desinger work, what inspires them, what are their daily life thoughts and feelings.  Kavka shows it with a bright light and graphic eye. Her blog is for me, always a fresh and inspiring place to visit.

You can win this great drawing  till 01.09.2011 on Kavka blog here : kavka-giveaway

Toy – “ House of cards “ by Roy and Charles Eames

Do you know toys, which can pass from one generation to another? The classics, which doesn’t get old, and are always great fun for children at any age? For me one of them is a “House of cards”, designed by Roy and Charles Eames. This wonderful set was developed in the 1950s. Die-cut cards featuring images of what Eameses called "good stuff", chosen to celebrate "familiar and nostalgic objects from the animal, vegetable, and mineral kingdoms, are alowed you to made any kind of constructions. “

For the ones who doesn’t know the designers: Husband-and-wife design team/ Charles (1907-1978) and Ray (1912-1988) Eames were among the most influential designers of the twentieth century. Their landmark contributions include furniture, architecture, film, and graphics. They were pioneers in the modeling of plywood, which was developed from their experiments and projects. Their chairs are one of the best know in the world ;-)

Her four years spent at Marc Jacobs proved to be life-changing—it was there she met her future husband, designer Robert Geller (and winner of this year's CFDA Swarovski Award for Menswear)."

When she’s not traveling the world for work, Ramya can be found at the sleek Hamptons weekend home she shares with her daughter and husband. "

My design – final touch of my boys bed

Last days are bringing some changes in my life. Today my older son went back to school, the younger to the kindergarden for the first time. The boys start to sleep in their own room. I was writing about the bunk bed here …. We just did the bottom part, and its complete! I need some nice quilts, and pillows, to make it cosy, but not too sweet ;-) it’s a boys room! I have a lot of old shirts, from my husband, with a nice / “men” colours and good quality of cotton. I just wash them, iron, and cut… sketching….and shering with you some nice inspirations.
My older son loves to read in bed. Many of his books stacks next to his bed, and I want something nice for that (?) and I have to paint some shelfs …and then I will show you the final look ;-)

Book – Where Children Sleep – James Mollison

I came across a review in the Dutch newspaper NRC of a really special book. I watched it on the web, and just couldn’t stop thinking about it.
Author: James Mollison is Kenyan-born, English-raised, Venice-based documentary photographer. In his book Where Children Sleep he explores a remarkable diversity and disparity between childrens living around the world. He photograped their portraits and put them next to the pictures of their bedrooms. It took him over two years, travelling between the U.S.A., Mexico, Brazil, England, Italy, Israel and the West Bank, Kenya, Senegal, Lesotho, Nepal, China and India.

“The project became a vehicle to think about poverty and wealth, about the relationship of children to their possessions, and the power of children – or lack of it – to make decisions about their lives.”

Indira, 7, lives with her parents, brother and sister near Kathmandu in Nepal. Her house has only one room, with one bed and one mattress. At bedtime, the children share the mattress on the floor. Indira has worked at the local granite quarry since she was three. The family is very poor so everyone has to work. There are 150 other children working at the quarry. Indira works six hours a day and then helps her mother with household chores. She also attends school, 30 minutes' walk away. Her favourite food is noodles. She would like to be a dancer when she grows up.

Jamie, 9, lives with his parents and younger twins brother and sister in a penthouse on 5th Avenue, New York. Jamie goes to a prestigious school and is a good student. In his spare time he takes judo and goes for a swim. He loves to study finance. When he grows up, he wants to become a lawyer like his father.

Lamine (above), 12, lives in Senegal. He is a pupil at the village Koranic school, where no girls are allowed. He shares a room with several other boys. The beds are basic, some supported by bricks for legs. At six every morning the boys begin work on the school farm, where they learn how to dig, harvest maize and plough the fields using donkeys. In the afternoon they study the Koran. In his free time Lamine likes to play football with his friends.

Jasmine ("Jazzy"), 4, lives in a big house in Kentucky, USA, with her parents and three brothers. Her house is in the countryside, surrounded by farmland. Her bedroom is full of crowns and sashes that she has won in beauty pageants. She has entered more than 100 competitions. Her spare time is taken up with rehearsal. She practices her stage routines every day with a trainer. Jazzy would like to be a rock star when she grows up.
