Bertoia chair - modern design classic which I like so much, but which has some interesting story behind it! Harry Bertoia was an Italian-born artist, had a big passion for jewelry and was also working with Charles and Ray Eames. ( designing and creating wedding rings for them!) After he left their studio, he started his own, and designed five wire pieces that became known as the Bertoia Collection for Knoll. Unfortunately, this design had already been patented by Herman Miller for their Eames wire side chair. Herman Miller successfully sued Knoll, so subsequent generations of the Bertoia chair were made with a single thick wire on the edge of the chair. The Diamond Chair ( the more sculpture one and open) was the big success after that…and both of them accully are loved all over the world till now !
Harry Bertoia himself said of his work:
"If you look at these chairs, they are mainly made of air, like sculpture.
Space passes right through them."
