yellow bunk bed & studio soet

colorful children room in the Netherlands
working space for children

Should we start the new year with some colourful, positive blog post and a splash of yellow ?
Welcome in the house of colour and humour -
owner of  Studio Soet and Soetwaren, stylist Myrthe Smit

The yellow bed is a transformation of standard IKEA bunk bed. Like you can see, nobody is afraid of colours in this room! We can see a yellow bunk bed, orange chairs and colourful walls. It always suprise me, that in Dutch children’s rooms you can see pattern wallpaper which is combine with many other textiles and it all magically fits together. Can you spot this retro flower pattern on the wallpaper and then bedlinen on the bed with grid, dots and other flowers?  If I would use a rich pattern wallpaper on the wall I would probably ‘calm it down’ by use of basic colours. Stylist Myrthe Smit is not afraid of playing with many different shapes and colours.  In her work for Studio Soet we can easily recognise the same personal style.

black&white kid's rooms

Chrismas mood in home of photographer and stylist Elisabeth Heier

I love you to the moon white pillow
teener room in black&white

One of the strongest trends in kids deco past year was the black&white interior
I wonder how long it will stay around…and what will be next.

I think black&white kid's rooms can be very playful when we mix different patterns and textures. I collected few examples for you to see how nice we can play with accessories. The base is most of the time white ( walls, furniture) which keeps the organised and fresh look of the room and then all special elements will stand out. Popular graphic patterns are : stripes , half-moon, cross, dots, clouds, trees and then also a text on textile or wall poster. We can also add a bit of grey and it will all stay in the same monochromatic atmosphere and give calm and quiet effect.

Below you can see a room with a very nice black bunk bed. It was custom made by a Dutch architect’s studio ateliers197. The most important for the architect it was to create as much storage space as possible, so important in kids’ rooms. You can see more pictures from the house here: woonhuis delft

NEW for toddler’s room at Rafa-kids

Rafa-kids’ collection of bedding, blankets, pillows and baskets for a child’s room is growing this season. Since we have our own design beds and desk and make pictures of them in our studio I was always in a hunt for products to use in a photo session.   This time I have the comfort to play with our new little collection of home deco accessories…and it’s feels like a good start.

I like Ferm Living’s products since a long time and I think they are one of the best kid’s brands on the market at the moment. Now we have in our collection two new bedding sets for toddlers: bedding with triangles grey and bedding with triangles rose and little bear kite. Many parents buy our R toddler bed for kinds younger that 3, and then they ask us for a perfect bed dumper for their child. We think this soft pillow snake can be a wonderful option. What’s more? A simple yet stylish baskets to store all of the kids’ toys! ….and there is more coming…..

blue jeans

Rafa-kids a teen bed

Blue and orange are one of my favourite colour combination. Last year we did a photo session with our Rafa-kids A teen bed in this colours which you see above. I still like it so much!  My older son loves orange colour too, but it was not that easy to make a room with it. Here you can see my post about it : boys-room   . You will probably say, oh yes, orange is a favourite Dutch colour, but acutely you see it mostly only during the national holidays, not really that much in the home deco. I personally think that orange in combination with black colours gets a bit to heavy, and brings you into halloween mood, but with touch of blue tones, jeans, and some textures of grey, it’s getting lighter and elegant. Orange with the industrial, raw accessories looks also very fresh.

K desk in black from rafa-kids

Rafa-kids K desk in a black&white child room with a splash of yellow
Rafa-kids K desk in black

I did't plan to post or work these days….but when last week we got Rafa-kids K desk  prototypes in white and black, I just had to do something!
The K desk in color looks so beautiful and so much different to me than natural one. My first feeling was to put this dark desk into a room with the white F bunk bed and add a splash of yellow color. Black color for a child's room might not be a first though of a parent, but I think with a touch of color this furniture piece looks so playful and cheerful. The good thing is, that when your child will enter the teenager faze of life, the K desk can easily find its place in a cool new room. Actually I would't mind to get this desk for my self! I hope you like what you see. Our Rafa-kids desk is not available yet, but the production will start very soon, and is going to be available at the beginning of October.

children's rooms with moroccan rugs

children hanger for clothes with moroccan rug

" … The Beni Ourain are a confederation of seventeen Berber tribes that live in the Atlas region of Morocco. The women of the tribe weave these carpets a.k.a. “White Giants” that are known for their distinct brown or black geometric patterns on a primarily cream or white background."

I spotted many Maroccan rugs at the M&O a year ago in Paris. I realized then, how popular they are becoming in the Western culture. They give this bohemian vibe to any type of interior so quickly. I like Scandinavian minimalism, monohrom colors in interior deco, so it might be not an easy choice for me to make…but… I really like their soft and nice look in children's rooms! Since the moroccan rugs are of a very good quality, long lasting product, its an investment you could make for many years. I'he never really like rugs which are dedicated only to kids, with childish motifs, so this is very good alternative in my opinion. The black and white ones are absolutely beautiful!

In this month's edition of ELLE DECORATION UK
you can find "mini adventure" small part dedicated to children's rooms.
I always get really exited when a magazine like that get involved in creating inspirations for kids' deco. This styling was made by Alex Kristal and photographed  by Jake Curtis. And as far as I can see, we are staying in a monochrome trend, so not much colors for kids. Instead of that, we have a reach pallet of different tones of gray and natural textures of wood, linen, felt, paper decorations and touch of industrial metal. For me, there are timeless beautiful elements which you can use in different parts of the house, not only for kids' rooms.
I will just say : great selection for a modern family!

Some brands and products I really like:
the zilalila knitted bean bag, paper lamps from studiosnowpuppe  and bedding collection from numero 74 and bedandphilosophy . Furniture used in this pictures are also coming from brands not particularly dedicated to kids: little chairs from anothercountry or table from hay, and felt panels above the desk - from Norm Architects ( can be used in any modern working space). Lovely small toys for kids : scizor cusion from sian zeng and paper decoration from mr.printables make the space perfect.
