Rafa-kids pre-teenager boy’s room

My older son is now 8 and a half and I notice that on one hand he is still pretty childish but on the other he would like to be so cool and independent. He would go to bed with his favourite little bear, hang his favourite drawings around him and then only the sophisticated black shirt is an option for a day outfit.  Do you recognise this ? For me it is sort of in between phase of life , which I think can be called - pre-teen.  His room is then also a bit of mix of things from different ages and that’s what we also tried to imagine in our studio. Pre-teenager’s room with Rafa-kids’ black K desk and X stool. You can see his lego boxes, which he absolutely loves, pillows and cuddly, and a bit of messy space, because he doesn’t care so much….

We believe the K desk can be used for many years to come, because it is such a sophisticated furniture piece, for kids of any age.

House Bed for kids - trend

If you google “ house bed for kids “ , you would not believe how many options the market already offers. I have serious problem to select only few images for this post. I see the HOUSE shape beds, frames, boards on the wall , boards around the mattresses or even bunk beds in a simple house shape in kid’s rooms.

The options are endles: from simple, minimalist version of a DIY house, to a ready made a ‘real’ big house bed for your child. From May, well known company Stokke will add to their collection a new bed with the bed frame in a house shape. Is it going to be as famous as their trip trap chair ? 

The large , house bed frame is for me a modern interpretation of a traditional four-poster bed. The beams around the beds are used to hang decorative elements for a personal look of the room.  

Whether we like it or not …these beds houses are about to stay here for longer.

Let’s start our Monday with inspiration for a children’s rooms. 

I choose to show you, some rooms in a vtwonen style, and if you are not familiar with this name, here is a small introduction.  Vtwonen is a Dutch interior magazine which comes out every month and is run by Carlein Kieboom. Instead of mainly following the trends of their sector, the mag has their own, very strong style, which you will always recognise, going through the pages. Part of their team, are two of my very favourite stylists : Marianne Luning and Cleo Schuerman. 

Why I like so much the vtwonen’s style and what’s so unique about it ? In few words, I will say creativity to mix old and new elements, vintage pieces with modern design, courage in use of different textures and colours. DIY ideas are very important part of vtwonen’s world. You will see a lot of natural materials, raw, not polish, sober furniture and accessories. Children’s rooms are part of this concept, and that is something I really appreciate.  Vtwonen even have their own junior’s furniture collection.

bunk bed from France - AM.PM.

I’m always looking for new and well designed beds for kids which appears on the market . 

The AM.PM’s furniture collection of bunk beds from France caught my eye recently. 

Their collection have a pleasant basic shape and it’s looking functional. The bunk bed can be set up in two position: standard bunk bed and also two separate beds on the ground level.  White colour of the beds it’s a perfect start point to make a personal room. The bunk bed with the desk underneath is my favourite. I really like the storage shelfs incorporated into the bed and shelfs around the desk make an easy place to show child’s treasures. You can’t see the mattress and the sleeping area of the bed , which gives the owner a bit of privacy.

You probably know I’m a big fun of plywood. When I saw this adjustable wall storage system from Kerf Design I really liked it. This system is build on a simple wall panel with holes, and you can easy add to it new elements. It can be a simple shelf, or a bookshelf even desk can be added into the wall. The company Kerf Design is located in Seattle and they do a lot of custom made project. You can have a look at their Facebook page for more inspiration. 

The other projects (bellow) )  are from Baukind which have designed many kindergarten/day cares in Germany. You can see how easy it is accully to work with plywood and create simple storage elements and systems for children.

I’m really exited about my little trip to m&o in Paris in a few days. 

I’m going as visitor to ‘spy’ what’s going on in the home deco and kids’ world . It’s such an intensive and full of people fair, but a great experience! This smart desk & bench called The Pupitre is from La Subtile and will be probably launched on m&o among other new products from different brands and designers. I really like industrial look and dual function of this furniture. La Subtile is found by Alexandre, Antoine, Benjamin and Frédéric in 2013, they design looks very smart and playful. Big plus for the fresh colour!

NEW - K desk from Rafa-kids

Finally I can show you our new Rafa-kids K desk! 

I could not sit still for few weeks. There was a lot of testing going on, prototyping and I thought the process and trouble shooting will never end. My partner in business/life is a perfectionist and I'm a short tempered lady, so its not so easy sometimes. I always try to say to myself , when I can't speed up the process 'good thing's need time' . This is so true…

Now we can proudly present our K desk and we hope you will like this new piece of furniture as much as we do. The K desk is simply named after it's leg shape. When you look at old industrial drawing desks, many of them have the legs like that. We also like the old school desks with lid and hidden space inside so much. I think we managed to make a modern and new version of it! A modern desk, which is not only for kids, but also parents. A beautiful and good design which will last for years.
